Show #2

Time for Show #2!

Hope you enjoy reading, please keep those questions and comments coming.

And just for you John Litzler: a bigger font!!

Original Muggins
:
so kyle, another crazy nfl weekend, any quick hit reactions?
kboenitz: well, i like the skins beating the cowboys, that was just special, but i dont think its panic time for all those cowboy fans just yet
Original Muggins: yeah, the skins are a great team, and one loss is nothing huge
Original Muggins: but they got exposed, did they not?
kboenitz: they did, but honestly i dont know what jason garrett is thinking, i heard a stat before the game that the cowboys are something ridiculous like 22-1 when marion barber gets the ball 20 times, why would you not go with that?
Original Muggins: haha yeah, he obviously did not read my rant last week
kboenitz: silly man
Original Muggins: anyway any other games?
Original Muggins: are the chiefs for real?
Original Muggins: is huard really that much better than thigpen?
kboenitz: well it would be hard not to perform better than what thigpen has been doing
kboenitz: the chiefs maybe just needed to get the ball rolling
kboenitz: finally a great game from LJ, maybe they can carry that momentum
Original Muggins: yeah, it's possible
Original Muggins: i'd like to point out something in the eagles bears sunday nighter
Original Muggins: why in the world did andy reid call four straight runs by a backup runningback to a backup offensive lineman's side to win the game?
kboenitz: i think there must have been something in the coaches' water this week, cuz that was ridiculous
kboenitz: especially when you have mcnabb, who is a very big quarterback
Original Muggins: exactly
Original Muggins: our mvp choice early
Original Muggins: and you take the game out of his hands
Original Muggins: i don't get it
kboenitz: on the half yard line, i think donovan can get that
kboenitz: and also
kboenitz: on an earlier down, why not have him roll out to the right, see what happens?
Original Muggins: exactly, play action bootleg = td
Original Muggins: oh well, i guess the NFC east had to lose one eventually
kboenitz: if this is the only one, i'll be upset thought
kboenitz: though
Original Muggins: haha yeah
Original Muggins: alright i like this next topic
Original Muggins: what do you think of rookies in the NFL this year?
Original Muggins: can you remember so many successful rookies in one season in offensive skill positions?
kboenitz: i really can't, and it's hard to pick the most succesful one too, because there are so many
kboenitz: i was really impressed by desean jackson on sunday night, he's already the favorite target for mcnabb, and while he does make a few mistakes, he's got a bright future ahead
Original Muggins: well let's go by position
Original Muggins: QB?
kboenitz: flacco!
Original Muggins: i agree, what he did on monday night was downright impressive
kboenitz: and his name is almost falco
kboenitz: star fox and the replacements
kboenitz: cant go wrong
Original Muggins: no you can't, but what about matt ryan?
kboenitz: i think he's very hit or miss, a couple shining moments, but a lot of the falcons success is going to come from turner
Original Muggins: I completely agree
Original Muggins: okay WR
Original Muggins: eddie royal vs. desean jackson
kboenitz: i think jackson is the bigger play maker, royal is a very talented receiver but he's not gonna be the big play type guy with marshall as cutlers favorite target
Original Muggins: i've also been really impressed with d-jax, and i think that typically WR's and RB's have a lot easier time as rookies than QB's do, which is why flacco is so incredibly impressive to me- with no great playmakers around him!
kboenitz: absolutely, and in baltimore where defense has been the key for so many years, if they can get some people around flacco, that's a tough team
Original Muggins: already a tough team- but they become a contender
kboenitz: true
Original Muggins: alright now RB
Original Muggins: there's a few here- McFadden, Forte, and Jonathan Stewart come to mind
kboenitz: early on i was most impressed with forte, but it seems like he's quieted down a bit, but jonathan stewart seems to be putting up very consistent numbers for the panthers
Original Muggins: yeah, well i think forte's quietening down had something to do with the eagles #1 ranked run defense, so I think forte still is most impressive to me
Original Muggins: but mcfadden has really slowed down
kboenitz: those toe injuries can be more damaging than they sound
Original Muggins: yeah, just ask LT
Original Muggins: well overall, I'm extremely impressed with a rookie class i didn't think much of on draft day
kboenitz: also dont forget chris johnson too
Original Muggins: and that's just offensive skill positions, not to mention defense and linemen
Original Muggins: indeed, how could i forget?
Original Muggins: beast of a man
kboenitz: killed me in fantasy this week
Original Muggins: haha, he'll do that again i'm sure
kboenitz: tenessee just gets better and better
Original Muggins: agreed.
Original Muggins: alright so who is an underrated team that we should be looking out for?
kboenitz: well i'd like to say the jags, cuz i think theyre gonna get better, but people still rate them pretty high, so i wouldnt say theyre underrated
kboenitz: but i think putting the seahawks in the basement of the nfl is a bad move
kboenitz: they have very talented receivers returning, and i still say they win their busted up division
Original Muggins: okay, jags and seahawks then, both have tough matchups this week
Original Muggins: you think either one can pull them off?
Original Muggins: jags have steelers and the seahawks have your g-men
kboenitz: i dont think the seahawks beat the giants this week, especially with their receievers just returning, but who knows, anyone can beat the giants
kboenitz: the jags and steelers will be interesting, both teams with so many injuries and now the steelers with their last running back available, i think the jags pull that one out
kboenitz: and garrard seems to be getting it together, finally
Original Muggins: okay, both big games, my underrated team is the 1-3 vikings
Original Muggins: people are writing them off, and that may be justified, i think one of their big defensive playmakers got injured, but i just don't think this team is ready to call it quits
kboenitz: and they play in a very up and down division like the seahawks
Original Muggins: yes, i'd say it's wide open right now
Original Muggins: and i think they have the power running game and smash-mouth defense that can make other teams look weak
kboenitz: all hoping that AP stays healthy
Original Muggins: true.
Original Muggins: okay i think that's all for the NFL for now, we won't rub in too much the piece of humble pie that was served to the cowboys on jason campbell's platter, but i think it proves that it isn't quite time to ready those ring fingers
kboenitz: oh so true... and with each loss, another weakness becomes exposed, the cowboys better be careful, because they're the team that is gonna get every opponents best game
Original Muggins: yeah, like the bengals this week!
Original Muggins: look out!
kboenitz: haha who knows
Original Muggins: okay so onto college football
Original Muggins: any reactions from another crazy weekend, starting with the #1 team getting upset, again.
Original Muggins: ?
kboenitz: well i was really surprised that they lost, watching them play ohio state, they really looked like the most talented team in the nation, they just got shocked though, it was a very impressive win coming from the bushiest beavers in the country
Original Muggins: hahaha indeed, but looking at that game, they got outplayed
kboenitz: absolutely
kboenitz: and now quizz is on the national radar
Original Muggins: another texan we lost
kboenitz: pour one out for one's homies
Original Muggins: indeed, any other reactions?
kboenitz: well i was standing in royal memorial stadium with the longhorns just underway when i look up at the scoreboard and see that florida is down a touchdown late in the 4th, and i was just like "what?"
kboenitz: and then they lost by 1, and i really enjoyed watching the highlights of that game, what a game
kboenitz: i think this is what makes college football great though, the upsets, just like basketball, and when things get mixed up like this, so many teams get their chances
Original Muggins: well, this begs the question:
Original Muggins: is ole miss actually a decent team just like all the rest of the SEC, or is the SEC as a whole overrated?
kboenitz: i think its more of the former, the SEC is just great, and i think florida just got a little surprised
kboenitz: and tebow is really underperforming following his heismann year, which is kinda sad, but he needs to step up
Original Muggins: well making some connections here... snead used to play for texas...and couldn't get much going against big 12 teams, but now on ole miss he puts up 31 against a "solid" SEC defense... what's with that?
kboenitz: well that's true, and i'm not sure of the numbers here, but i dont think snead had the most outstanding quarterback numbers in that game
Original Muggins: okay, so he just managed it
Original Muggins: well what about bama-georgia? Do you consider that a dominating blowout despite the final score (it was 31-0 at half)
Original Muggins: or was the semi-comeback legit?
kboenitz: i think anytime you're up 31-0, you're gonna let up a bit, so i don't think the comeback was that legit, but georgia did finally get it together a bit, so thats a good sign for them, but i couldn't be more impressed with alabama
Original Muggins: yeah, who's your #1 team right now?
kboenitz: i still have to go with oklahoma, but put alabama right behind them
kboenitz: you?
Original Muggins: i'd take alabama, just because they've played some tough teams, dominating them, while OU has walked over some easy competition
Original Muggins: we'll see as the big 12 play gets underway
kboenitz: right, OU isn't going to have anything close to a cake walk to go to the national championship
Original Muggins: okay speaking of which, if you are USC, what do you need to have happen, other than winning out from here, to get to the championship game?
kboenitz: well USC got a little lucky in the fact that they got their loss early, and the bcs favors early losses over late ones, so they have that going for them
kboenitz: so if they win out, i think they just might squeak in there just because of the SEC and the Big 12 beating each other up, even though i think they're far from deserving it
Original Muggins: okay, but specifically, i think my assessment would be 1. every big 12 team needs to lose at least one game OR 2. every SEC team needs to lose at least two games OR 3. Penn St. and any other weird other teams need to lose a game
Original Muggins: i think any combination of two of those, and they have got the ticket as a one-loss tema
Original Muggins: sound about right?
kboenitz: ya, you're right, and that's why i will always hate the BCS
kboenitz: i say put USC, Texas, Mizzou, OK, 3 SEC teams, and a wild card in an 8 game playoff and see what happens
Original Muggins: yeah, the eternal college football gripe
kboenitz: ya ya, and i know im not alone
Original Muggins: it would certainly make for less complaining, except for the teams that thought they deserved to be in there
kboenitz: true, and its the best idea, right behind my other great idea
kboenitz: ready for this one?
Original Muggins: yes
kboenitz: the entire college football season should be a bracketed tournament
Original Muggins: single elimination?
kboenitz: yup, lose and go home
Original Muggins: i'm pretty sure you're joking, but that would be the day
kboenitz: haha i am joking a bit
Original Muggins: okay so who is looking like the most likely "BCS buster" this season?
kboenitz: good question, i say its still too early to tell, before the polls even come out, but what do you think?
Original Muggins: i think penn state
Original Muggins: haha
Original Muggins: i know, it's a big-10 team
Original Muggins: but is the big-10 really a power conference this year?
kboenitz: it's hard to say, i can't really gauge how good everyone is, i think watching ohio state vs wisconsin this week might be a good way to tell
Original Muggins: true
Original Muggins: and keep an eye on BYU
kboenitz: of course
Original Muggins: so every weekend there are huge upsets
Original Muggins: who is your mega-upset alert this week?
kboenitz: well i hate to pick Texas, but this game against Colorado has trap written all over it
kboenitz: you can't look ahead to OU, you have to focus, in the Big 12, every game is important, and Colorado is no push over
kboenitz: you?
Original Muggins: after naming Alabama my #1 team, i'm gonna say be on guard against Kentucky
Original Muggins: they aren't bad, and have a knack for upsetting SEC powerhouses
kboenitz: true
kboenitz: and south florida better be a little careful against Pitt this week as well
Original Muggins: yes of course
kboenitz: but i also think south florida should lose, mainly because their name is south florida
kboenitz: and my old partner austin left me for them
Original Muggins: well that's a sad story
kboenitz: indeed
Original Muggins: how good is colt mccoy?
Original Muggins: before we move on
kboenitz: he's good enough to be in the heismann race even though he's not the best quarterback in his conference
kboenitz: he's doing a great job of managing that team, he's making great throws and running the ball well
kboenitz: i do think, however, that sometimes he's too quick to bail on a pass play and just run it, and that as he gets older, he's gonna regret all those running plays
Original Muggins: yeah, that is possible, but i think to give his team the best chance now, to win this year, he has to run, because he is so much better when he gets his legs working
Original Muggins: has been since he came to texas
kboenitz: true
kboenitz: and his running is a big reason why texas is playing so well right now
Original Muggins: and they are exciting
kboenitz: they really are, they kept me in the stadium late into the 3rd this past week
kboenitz: and it was hot out there
Original Muggins: yeah, i was sad that i had to go to the astros game and turn off the tv
kboenitz: did you go to the one where they got spanked by the braves?
Original Muggins: they were getting spanked 9-0 when i showed up
Original Muggins: they made up a little ground, but not enough
kboenitz: must have been somewhat exciting though
Original Muggins: lots of hits
Original Muggins: speaking of astros, let's move to baseball
Original Muggins: what do you think of the almost NBA-like playoff schedule for the games?
kboenitz: well it definitely favors the teams with a front loaded pitching rotation because they get more rest, and lately some pitchers such as c.c. have showed their ability to pitch on short rest, so it should make things interesting
Original Muggins: just so you guys know what i'm talking about, let's look at the red sox' series schedule (5 games: wed, fri, sun, mon, wed
kboenitz: its a little ridiculous, you pack 162 games into a couple months, sometimes playing 6 or more games in a row, why change it in the post season?
Original Muggins: do you think it sacrifices some of the integrity of the game?
kboenitz: sure, that's why baseball has such a long regular season schedule, because these players are supposed to be conditioned to go out there every day and play
Original Muggins: yeah, so who does it favore?
Original Muggins: *favor?
Original Muggins: who has that front loaded pitching rotation?
kboenitz: oh, if only i knew baseball so much better
Original Muggins: haha okay
kboenitz: can we bring in travis pry for this one? maybe he can contribute
Original Muggins: he can be our first guest speaker
Original Muggins: not this week
kboenitz: haha true
Original Muggins: all i have left on baseball is i think cliff lee should be the AL cy-young winner
kboenitz: sure, and sabathia over on the NL side
Original Muggins: i guess we'll see how that turns out
kboenitz: theres only one october
kboenitz: my favorite slogan right behind "this is budweiser, this is beer"
Original Muggins: well there you have it
Original Muggins: two of kyle's favorite phrases
Original Muggins: we are introducing a new section this week
Original Muggins: my section is called josiah's fantasy tip of the week
Original Muggins: and here it is:
Original Muggins: when you plan your fantasy football draft, it always baffles me how many QB's are taken in the first few rounds, when year after year, the top QB's are not necessarily the best QBs by year end
Original Muggins: let's look at this year:
Original Muggins: top seven QBs in most drafts: Brady, manning, Romo, Brees, Palmer, Roethlisberger, and Derek Anderson
kboenitz: eli manning, of course :-P
Original Muggins: only TWO of those are in the top SEVENTEEN quarterbacks currently in my fantasy league
Original Muggins: that means that FIFTEEN other quarterbacks were taken after those who are performing better
kboenitz: get em trent edwards
Original Muggins: like Warner, Rodgers, Jason Campbell, who were all ranked lower than #18 in preseason rankings
kboenitz: so you're saying that i'm a genius for taking randy moss?
Original Muggins: the unpredictabliilty of quarterbacks, combined with this interesting side note: in a 12 team league, with one QB in each starting roster, you can assume that nobody will take two QB's before they have filled their starting roster, and you can get a top 12 quarterback in the 8th or 9th round (or even later) and get top RB's and WR's earlier, who are more reliable, means:
Original Muggins: WAIT to take quarterbacks in drafts
Original Muggins: you can get much better value
Original Muggins: that's my tip
Original Muggins: of the week
kboenitz: i like it
kboenitz: sadly we can't use it till next year :-P
Original Muggins: that's why i shared it :O
kboenitz: haha
Original Muggins: would you like to introduce your section?
kboenitz: sure, the name is still up for suggestions
kboenitz: but we're gonna stray from the norm and focus for a few minutes on a sport that doesn't get as much national attention
kboenitz: i debated between 2 for my first week, and i decided to go with college volleyball
kboenitz: for those of you who don't know, i did the color commentary for the Texas team last year, so this hits close to heart a little bit
kboenitz: the team takes on Oklahoma tonight in a nationally televised game on ESPNU, that's another reason i picked this week to do it
kboenitz: but you really haven't seen excitement until you see a volleyball match go into its 5th set with rally scoring, it gets intense and is comparable to watching a march madness game
kboenitz: and i didn't believe it until i experienced it firsthand, but its so true
Original Muggins: i'm sorry but i was too focused on allyson jennings whenever i went to the games to enjoy the excitement of the action
kboenitz: and especially watching the number 3 ranked longhorns play, you'd be so impressed at the talent of these girls
kboenitz: yes, well she's gone now, sadly, but especially those of you that are still at UT, go catch a volleyball game, and if you want some extra excitement, go see when Nebraska comes to town
kboenitz: that's my pitch for the week
Original Muggins: there ya have it
Original Muggins: next, we have kyle vs. josiah pick 'em game
Original Muggins: we are going to take six major NFL games and six major NCAA games and pick them, see how we do
kboenitz: bring it on
kboenitz: unofficially i won last week, cuz i picked bama
Original Muggins: indeed
Original Muggins: start with NFL
Original Muggins: titans at ravens?
kboenitz: titans
Original Muggins: titans
Original Muggins: Colts at texans?
kboenitz: colts
Original Muggins: texans
Original Muggins: skins at eagles?
kboenitz: is westbrook playing?
Original Muggins: he's questionable i think
kboenitz: skins
Original Muggins: i'll take eagles
Original Muggins: bucs at broncos?
kboenitz: bucs
Original Muggins: bucs
Original Muggins: steelers at jags
kboenitz: jags
Original Muggins: steelers
Original Muggins: vikings at saints?
kboenitz: saints
Original Muggins: vikings
Original Muggins: alright onto college football
Original Muggins: Kentucky-Alabama?
kboenitz: bama
Original Muggins: UK!
kboenitz: haha
Original Muggins: Auburn-Vandy?
kboenitz: hmm
kboenitz: ill go with SEC power, auburn
Original Muggins: Auburn
Original Muggins: Texas-Colorado?
kboenitz: even though it is my upset alert, i still gotta go with UT
Original Muggins: weak
Original Muggins: Ut
Original Muggins: Texas Tech-Kansas state?
kboenitz: TTU
Original Muggins: TTU
Original Muggins: Ohio State-Wisconsin?
kboenitz: this is the toughest one of the week to pick in my opinion
kboenitz: ive been debating it all week
kboenitz: and i really think i have to go with OSU
Original Muggins: OSU for me too
Original Muggins: USC-Oregon?
kboenitz: SC
Original Muggins: Yeah, USC to bounce back
Original Muggins: alright mail time!
kboenitz: here's the mail it never fails
kboenitz: (blues clues)
kboenitz: go on
Original Muggins: haha
Original Muggins: okay john litzler asked if the gap between the big 12 and the SEC is as big as we make it out to be, considering three big 12 teams are in the top 5?
kboenitz: i really think that gap is what it should be, the SEC is getting some of the big conference games up there early, when the Big 12 starts playing each other, they won't be in the top 5 as much anymore
Original Muggins: exactly, i think if georgia hadn't played alabama, and florida hadn't played ole miss, they would stil be up there, and if they are simply losing to other SEC teams how can we fault the conference for that?
kboenitz: we can't, its just unfortunate for those teams that they have to play in such a stacked conference, but it makes for better games, which we enjoy
Original Muggins: yes it does
Original Muggins: but to answer your question, i think the gap is as big as it has been all year
kboenitz: true, and you cant judge by texas demolishing arkansas, because thats top of big 12 versus the very bottom of the SEC
Original Muggins: yeah, what would Alabama do to Texas A& M?
kboenitz: its scary to think about that
Original Muggins: I think it's about time we issued our weekly send-off rant
Original Muggins: it's been a good one i think
kboenitz: indeed
Original Muggins: so what would you like to leave us with kyle?
kboenitz: i'd really just like to say how upset i am with Ricky Williams
kboenitz: i can't believe that he's even still tempted to be smoking weed. if you are a professional football player, how hard could it possibly be to give up an illegal drug, if i were him, and knew i was still going to be tempted, i'd volunteer myself for hourly drug testings... its ridiculous really, and it sends out a bad example to the youth of the nation. he's supposed to be a role model for these kids, and while i am happy he was able to lay off the cheeba in the off week, he really needs to work on putting forth a more positive image
kboenitz: and also a shout out to chase williams for his stellar performance on the PIR this morning
Original Muggins: i echo that shout out, despite the fact that given the opportunity to give a shout out, he mentions his random friends in the crowd and not his true homeboys
Original Muggins: nothing but love chase
kboenitz: i was surprised to not hear your name in that shout out while the wheel was spinning, but drew care put him on the spot, you cnat fault him for that, he was probably nervous
Original Muggins: alright as for my rant, i aim it at espn and other sports media
Original Muggins: in your rush to be the first person to call the lane kiffin firing, you have been wrong two weeks running, and even a day early this week, and i think it sacrifices the integrity of your media to call things as fact before they actually happen. if lane kiffin gets fired, tell me, and if there is talk of him being fired, say "there is a possibility that lane kiffin is in the hot seat right now, it's up to al davis" don't say "kiffin to be fired today" if you don't know
Original Muggins: it's like the boy who cried wolf, i will never believe it any more, i won't believe linehan is fired until i see the rams without him on the sideline
kboenitz: you're absolutely right, and as a journalst, we are taught of the dangers of the internet and sometimes the need to be first comes before the need to be right, and it should never be that way
Original Muggins: exactly
Original Muggins: so please, don't do that any more
Original Muggins: it's frustrating, and it sucks for lane kiffin and raider fans everywhere
kboenitz: on that note though, think anyone wants to coach the raiders?
Original Muggins: haha not until al davis is gone
kboenitz: haha true
Original Muggins: alright well that wraps things up
Original Muggins: thanks for reading
Original Muggins: and send us questions/topics for next week!
kboenitz: thank you, i'm off to work!
Original Muggins: look at that
Original Muggins: kyle has a job!

Gentlemen,

I liked the show. You've improved over week 1 so just keep up the great work.
Kyle, maybe you could call your segment Obscure Sports Weekly (OSW) it worked well for the popular magazine OSQ (obscure sports quarterly) in the movie dodgeball... it's now a nationally recognized publication ;)
Also, the lady bears are looking very good in volleyball so definitely watch when Baylor comes to town. They are in second place in the Big XII.
Speaking of baylor, how great is it that they aren't the degs of the Big XII when it comes to football anymore? Its great that when we talk about the worst team in the Big XII its the ags... I love it

P.S. I'd love to be a quest sometime in the future after Travis and such... i.e. if the bears pull a miraculous upset over Oklahoma while i'm there... or for any matter if they beat any Big XII team that isn't Iowa St. or ATM... you guys are great. keep it up.
